Dice-Rolling Drawing Prompt: Fun Summer Art

Use our free Roll-A-Picture worksheet to illustrate a fun summer scenario

At my house, the beginning of August is hardcore appointment time. You know, the time where you cram in all of your family's haircuts, dentist visits, and sports physicals. Inevitably, one or more of your kids will be bored, waiting for siblings to finish their turn in the hot spot. Our fellow Mac KID publisher, Sarah Hauge, came up with one of my favorite ways to entertain kids on the go (or at home!), and I can honestly confirm that the direction it provides, full of endless combinations, has been a life saver for me, and a fun way to pass the time for my kiddos. Try it on your next appointment run, or give it to your kids when they are bored at home!

My daughter is an artist and a creative thinker, but every now and then she needs a little boost to get her imagination flowing. Perhaps you can relate to a recent conversation we've had.

Child: Hey, Mom! What should I draw?"
Me: I don't know. A flower? An animal? School?
Child: Boring.
Me: Then I'm sure you'll think of something.
Conclusion: Child walks away without drawing anything.

If you've found yourself in the same situation, you know that it can be quite frustrating. That's why we've created a simple roll-a-picture worksheet to help with brainstorming your own silly scenarios.

Here's how to use our Roll-A-Picture worksheet.

  • Print out our Roll-A-Picture: Summer Fun worksheet.
  • Roll a die 4 times to decide a character, an activity, a setting, and a specific time.
  • Get to drawing!
  • Optional: Roll again to create a whole different scenario.

With a little guidance from our Roll-A-Picture worksheet, our conversations are a bit different now:

Child: Hey, Mom! What should I draw?"
Me: How about a pirate who's eating ice cream in our backyard on a windy day?
Child: Okay. I like that idea.
Conclusion: Child has fun creating a masterpiece!
