Recycle Your Christmas Tree and Lights for FREE This Year

Treecycle is a seasonal program offered by Denver Recycles that turns discarded Christmas trees into mulch after the holiday season. Free Treecycle mulch is made available to Denver residents at the Mulch Giveaway and Compost Sale in May.  

Accepted for Drop-off:

  • Remove all decorations, lights, and the tree stand from your tree.
  • Only natural, real trees will be accepted.  
  • No artificial or flocked trees.

FREE Tree Drop Off Locations

WEEKDAY DROP SITES: December 26 through January 31*

The following Treecycle locations will be open weekdays from 8 am to 2 pm

  • Cherry Creek Transfer Station – 7301 E. Jewell Ave. (enter on E. Jewell Ave.)
  • Havana Nursery – 10450 Smith Rd. (enter on Smith Road)
  • Central Platte Campus – 1271 W. Bayaud Ave. (next to the Denver Animal Shelter)

*These locations will be closed on Monday, January 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. holiday

WEEKEND DROP SITES: Saturday, January 11 and 18

The following Treecycle locations will be open from 8am to 2pm:

  • Sloan’s Lake Northwest Parking Lot  – W. Byron Pl. and Yates St.
  • Bruce Randolph – E. 40th Ave. and Steele St.
  • Fred Thomas Park – 2400 Quebec St.
  • Evie Dennis School Campus – 4800 Telluride St.
  • Central Platte Campus – 1271 W. Bayaud Ave. EXTENDED HOURS UNTIL 4:00 p.m.
  • Carson Elementary - 5420 E 1st Ave.
  • Kennedy High School – Newland St. and Brown Pl.
  • Congress Park - E. 9th and Josephine St.

Pick up free mulch made from your tree at the annual Mulch Giveaway & Compost Sale in May.


Last year, Denver recycled 4352 pounds of holiday lights! If you have broken, burned out, or impossibly tangled holiday lights at your house, now is the time to recycle them... the City of Denver will do it for free through January 2, 2025. 

Accepted for Drop-off:

  • Light strings and wires for incandescent, LED, and "icicle" lights.
  • Attached bulbs okay.

Not Accepted for Drop-off:

  • Bubble (liquid-filled) or neon lights
  • Packaging material
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Plastic bags

Cherry Creek Recycling Drop-off

  • Located near the intersection of S. Quebec St. and E. Cherry Creek South Drive. Enter going south on Cherry Creek Dr. South (follow the signs).
  • Tuesday-Friday: 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Saturday: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
    Closed on Sundays, Mondays, and City holidays

Blue Star Recyclers 

Blue Star will be closed December 24 - January 1. The drop site will reopen on January 2.
