FREE Comic Book Day Returns to Local Denver Metro Shops on May 4

Mark your calendars for this huge event!

By Christen Reiner, Macaroni KID Lakewood-Littleton & Macaroni KID Denver Editor and Publisher April 24, 2024

There's nothing like cracking open a fresh, new comic book on a Saturday morning, or finally securing your favorite comic after waiting for what seems like forever for the next book in the series. Comic books are great for all ages (and especially awesome for sharing with your own children or grandchildren). They are amazing for getting reluctant readers to look forward to reading. They are always exciting and there is a genre for just about every interest. If you are a comic book fan, or looking to get into comic books, Free Comic Book Day is for you!

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD), one of the comic book industry’s most beloved and anticipated celebrations, celebrates 23 years with the traditional event, scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

FCBD is the biggest event in the comic book industry — a single day when participating comic book specialty shops around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops! Founded on the belief that for every person out there, there’s a comic book they’ll love, the annual event offers a huge selection of free titles designed to appeal to a broad range of age levels and their tastes.

The 2024 FCBD will be held on May 4. Watch the video to find out what FCBD is all about!

Every year, the industry comes together to give away free comics and encourage both curious, first-time comic book readers and seasoned comic book fans to flock to the best place in the comic book community: local comic shops. Each one is unique in its community, with a style and personality all its own, and each one carries a full line of comics, graphic novels, toys and related products. Local comic shops are the hubs of our community, where fans can come together to discover new comics, make lifelong friends, and find a sense of commonality.

In addition to passing out free comics, many comic shops also host community events such as costume contests, creator signings, drawings by guest artists, raffles and prizes, photos with costumed characters, and other fun community activities throughout the day. Every comic shop celebrates FCBD in their own unique way, giving fans a great opportunity to engage with their local comic shop and thriving community of pop culture enthusiasts.

So how do you get involved in this fantastic day? Use the Official Free Comic Book Day Store Locator to find a list of participating shops close to you. Simply input your zipcode and hit enter, and the Locator will generate a list of comic shops near you that are participating. Then, all you need to do is a pick a shop from that list and show up there on the first Saturday in May to get your free comic books!

Choose one closer to home, or travel a bit farther to get your free comic book and call it a mini road trip!
