Talk Like a Pirate Day was started as a joke in 1995 by two friends from Oregon. In 2002, they asked humor columnist Dave Barry to be the spokesperson for National Talk Like a Pirate Day. Dave thought it was funny, so he agreed. He wrote a column about the holiday, introducing Talk Like a Pirate Day to the world, and it's been celebrated on September 19 ever since.
Pirates have been around for a long time. In fact, the first recorded acts of piracy happened in the 2nd century, and piracy hit its height between 1650 and 1680, when ships became the main transportation of goods after the discovery of the New World.
FUN FACT: Female pirate Ching Chih commanded a fleet of 1,800 ships and between 40,000 to 80,000 pirates in the 1800s.
